Northwest TURN Regional Satellite Takes Off!

Seattle, WA May 16-17, 2014

Over 75 participants representing 10 labor-management teams from Oregon and Washington attended the first Northwest TURN Labor-Management Conference on May 16-17, 2014 at the IAM & AW Lodge 751 in Seattle, WA. NW TURN Regional Coordinators, Mary Lindquist, past president of the Washington Education Association and Cindy Williams, President of Oregon City Education Association, opened the conference by with an overview of the Regional TURN efforts across the country and a history of TURN. Dr. Patrick Dolan provided a framework for participating teams to examine their collaborative efforts.

A panel discussion on "Collaborative Approaches to Improving Teaching Effectiveness and Student Learning" featured Salem-Keizer School District/Salem-Keizer Education Association, OR and Anacortes School District/Anacortes Education Association, WA and their joint efforts to improve teaching and learning.

NEA Teacher Ambassadors, Ann Llwewllyn, Cassie Harrelson and Adam Ebrahim joined Jennie Beltramini, Anacortes Education Association to provide an overview of the CCSS and related issues such as professional development plans and the use of Smarter Balanced Assessments. Participating teams had opportunities to plan next steps and identify topics for the fall NW TURN meeting. Funding is provided by the NEA Great Public Schools to support NW TURN.
